Macon Sense is no longer in print due to high printing costs. We are evaluating an online-only version to offer quality content and promote local businesses through advertising. We will post an announcement here as soon as decisions are made. Stories still to tell

In all my travels nationally and internationally as a writer/journalist for more than four decades, never has a place so endeared me to it as does Macon County. Although as of eight years ago, I’m a “comeya” to the area versus a “beenya” – as the Gullah people of South Carolina refer to newbie versus generational residents – I have been enamored with the place, people, heritage, and culture from day one. And, despite telling countless stories of the human spirit, unique histories, architecture, and fascinating locales all these years, the opportunities for articles are endless in this region.

As an editor and writer, the financial aspects of publishing are outside my purview – both intellectually and by choice. But there has been no avoiding the modern reality that publishing a free paper in a smallish community is a challenge. Printing costs are through the roof, employees need to make a living wage, and freelancers should be paid adequately for their talents. Thus, the writing has been on the wall for Macon Sense.

No matter how wonderful and appreciated the product – no matter how badly needed is a free, printed community newspaper – bills must be paid. Macon County’s citizens and businesses have certainly supported our endeavors, but it has not been enough to keep Macon Sense in the black, unfortunately.

All that conveyed, our last free, printed edition is this one: Sept. 25. However, there are so many of “your stories” still to tell in this wonderful community – so much more to delve into regarding this area’s history and heritage, distinct individuals’ talents and dedication, community spirit, future developments, and opportunities for enjoyment and involvement. Thus, we are working toward using our exceptional website – maconsense.org – to continue our pledge that Macon Sense is a platform for “Your Community; Your Stories.”

As we regroup and determine continued advertising support and our expenses, sans printing and full-staff costs, we are looking at continuing to provide quality content online, via the website and with tidbits of information and reminders through social media sites. We know that such a move will not appeal to a great many people in Macon County. I, too, prefer the printed word. Yet, we have had to acquiesce to the fact that the printed word is, unfortunately, beyond financial reach for a small operation such as ourselves.

Please relish this edition of Macon Sense and have patience with us as we navigate a possible transition into website-only. Hopefully, and God willing, in the near future you will be able to read regularly at maconsense.org about your interesting neighbors and businesses, about the historical aspects of the county, about all that this extraordinary place that many of us call home undertakes and offers.

Personally, writing for Macon Sense these two years has been a gift; my prayers are that I might be able to continue to do so – alongside our talented pool of writers. Stay tuned!

Thank you. Many blessings!
