Earlier this month, the Town of Franklin broke ground on the new inclusive playground, marking a major step towards a recreational space where all children can play together. The playground will be built on the Whitmire Property, which was purchased by the town in 2004. Oft debated for other uses, the property is now home to a disc golf course and skate park, with future plans for a bike path, amphitheater, pickleball courts, and more.
The groundbreaking included members of the council as well as the mayor and other community members who came out to see the next step in a long-anticipated project.
Mayor Jack Horton thanked all of the council and community members who worked together to make this idea a reality. “Inclusive playgrounds allow for kids with disabilities to have a chance to get outside and get fresh air and play,” he said. “Some kids have never had the opportunity to mingle with other children in the same playground, and this is a great chance for all children to have fun together.”
Originally, there was talk of the town selling the property for a profit; but eventually it was agreed that using the property for recreational purposes for the youth of Franklin would be the best avenue forward.
Horton also recognized community advocates Kathy Peek and Hazel Norris for their efforts.
“This is not just a playground. We have a few playgrounds in Franklin. This is a promise that any child belongs here,” stated council member Mike Lewis.
Grants are covering $500,000 of the cost of the playground, which is half the total projected cost. Construction has already started and is projected to take around 180 days.
Inclusive playgrounds are created under the premise of being accessible for all children, regardless of their ability or disability.
Franklin’s inclusive playground will feature a nature theme that runs throughout the park, along with soft ground, weight limits of up to 450 pounds for children in wheelchairs, quiet areas for children who become overstimulated, a variety of swings and slides, and shaded areas.
