Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center is participating in a six-month community food offerings trial in partnership with local chefs and sponsored in part by WNC Food Systems Coalition. Food is served at regularly scheduled event programming and some sit-down community dinners.
For example, on open mic nights, the second Friday of each month, participants can purchase a charcuterie plate. During the recent monthly Speaker’s Series, a BBQ dinner was offered. When Asheville Mountain Boys performed July 26, a Greek dinner was served. A fee is charged for each food offering.
The primary project lead of this endeavor is Jenn Tuft, a Macon County resident who works for the WNC Food Systems Coalition, an organization that helps build collaboration in local food systems. She is also a professional cook, having worked for retreat centers and festivals. She explained that she has always wanted to make a positive impact on her community, and is thrilled to be working with Cowee School to provide fresh, prepared meals for her neighbors, both at Cowee’s regularly occurring events, and special one-off Appalachian Farm-to-Table fundraisers.
