Franklin High School (FHS) athletic director and coach Matt Bradley, has been named the Region 8 recipient of the N.C. High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Homer Thompson “Eight Who Make a Difference” award. Bradley will be honored at the NCHSAA Awards Ceremony in Greensboro, June 18.
Within his nominating application, FHS Principal Blair King lauded Bradley’s efforts and impact upon the school and its students.
“I believe every good coach can impact a student-athlete, but it takes a special person to personally invest in that student and build a relationship that will extend far beyond the field. Coach Bradley is that kind of person. His influence is not limited to individual students. In his role as athletic director, Coach Bradley has raised the standard across the entire department.”
His nomination application stated: “Whether through school-wide assemblies, pep rallies, or one-on-one conversations, Bradley instills the importance of character and conduct in every student.”
This year in particular, Bradley faced the added challenge of managing the athletic department without an assistant — a position many schools rely on. Plus, FHS continues undergoing major construction on campus, adding even more complexity to his role. While successfully organizing and hosting this year’s Mountain Seven Conference Basketball Tournament amid construction disruptions, his leadership turned a logistical challenge into a successful, well-run event that reflected his commitment to excellence, according to King.
King concluded, “Coach Matt Bradley is the epitome of what it means to be a servant-leader. He has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students — not just as athletes, but as young people finding their way in the world. He has invested in their potential, nurtured their growth, and guided them with care, integrity, and vision. His work has earned him the admiration and respect of our entire community.”
