Call to artists for upcoming Bartram exhibit

The Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservancy and the Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center have announced a call to artists for an upcoming exhibit, “The Attention of a Traveller.” The exhibit that will be on display from June 1 to Aug. 31 at Cowee School.

WHEN BOTANIST William Bartram traveled through Macon County in 1775, he documented his observations through writings and art (see image) – much of which ended up in his classic book, “Bartram’s Travels.” A call for artists to submit works for an upcoming exhibit at Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Bartram’s journey to and explorations of this area.

The exhibit is part of the Conservancy’s June 5-7 celebration of the 250th anniversary of artist and botanist William Bartram’s journey through northeast Georgia and Western North Carolina in May-June of 1775.

Artists are invited to submit up to three works that can be loosely inspired by the title of the exhibit, which is drawn from Bartram’s quote: “The attention of a ‘traveller,’ should be particularly turned, in the first place, to the various works of Nature, to mark the distinctions of the climates he may explore, and to offer such useful observations on the different productions as may occur.”

The deadline for submissions is May 1, and artists will be notified by May 25. Submissions should be submitted in a WORD document that includes an artist’s statement, along with images and dimensions of the works. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].

An opening reception for “The Attention of a Traveller” will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, at the Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center. This will be followed by a series of outings and classes on June 5, 6, and 7, culminating with an art and nature symposium on Saturday, June 7, at Cowee School. Art purchases from the show can be made through the Cowee Mercantile.

For more information on the 250th celebration, contact the Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservancy at [email protected] or visit www.blueridgebartram.org .
