Straight Talk

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer

This is a fact of life that reasonable Democrats and reasonable Republicans can agree on. A “Concise Economic History of the World” (Cameron/Neal) confirms the truth of this old saying.

George Orwell, in his book “1984,” wrote this about the working class: ”So long as they continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. Left to themselves, like cattle turned loose upon the plains of Argentina, they had reverted to a style of life that appeared to be natural to them, a sort of ancestral pattern. Work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer, and above all, gambling, filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.”

The investor class increases their wealth at the expense of workers who can’t afford health insurance and struggle to pay rent and put food on the table. Historically there is a tipping point, which is where we are heading today. We need better leaders and better education to have a society where everyone gets a fair shake.
