All things considered, Macon County Toys for Tots was a success. For the past two years, we have served 285 families and approximately 875 children.
Enrollments were down by approximately 35 families this year, many of whom declined to enroll because they felt Hurricane Helen was a more significant issue and did not want their participation to cause a shortage for others.
Our final family count was 261, and we delivered gifts to 768 children. Despite family submissions being lower than last year, the program has grown due to the community’s support and our improvement from previous events.
The Rotary Club of Highlands donated $4,000 to help fund our cause. This year is significant for the Rotary Club of Highlands, which will celebrate its 80th birthday, dubbing this year’s motto “Magic.” In the words of the president [Randy Foster] of the Rotary Club of Highlands: “I would offer that we are an organization of members who serve our local community, our state, our nation, and the international community.” Thus, their motto, ‘Service Above Self’ rang loud this year.
Jerry and Pam Gresham [of Highlands] donated $2,000. Jessica Ferrell from Regions Bank has supported our efforts over the year and recommended we complete and submit a grant request.
We have a great staff of volunteers, and we would not be able to facilitate this program without them. Debra Garren was a wonderful help in organizing and coordinating pick-ups and inventory control.
In addition to the volunteers who showed up each week to collect, pack, and distribute toys, many local organizations pitched in to raise awareness and collect toys in the community. Zonta Club held several events to collect toys and helped us out this year. Many other companies collected toys from clients, and we appreciate all of their assistance in making this a great Christmas for the children of Macon County.
We appreciate all the generous contributions people made through this season, and we look forward to a great 2025.
