Editor’s Note: Many of the events below are still happening, however some events are being rescheduled due to damage from Hurricane Helene. We will post any update we receive immediately below this Editor’s Note as they come in.

The Fall Estate Sale and Live Auction at Christine’s Home Décor/Isabel’s Collection in Otto benefitting Appalachian Animal Rescue Center which was originally scheduled for Sept. 28 will be tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, October 5, from 5 – 8 pm. The situation created by Hurricane Helene has forced the Board of Directors to move the date of this event.

The Macon County Library Board of Trustees meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 1 at the Hudson Library in Highlands has been postponed due to widespread power and communication outages, as well as travel advisories, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

The rescheduled meeting date has yet to be determined at this time, but will be posted and shared with the public as soon as possible. The Macon County Public Library, a member of the Fontana Regional Library, is located at 149 Siler Farm Road in Franklin, NC. Pickin’ on the Square is held at 6 p.m. at the Gazebo on the Square in downtown Franklin on the second and fourth Saturdays, May through Mid-October (weather permitting). Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Food vendors onsite. Upcoming: Sept. 28 – Arnold Hill (Alternative Rock/Americana Band); Oct. 12 – Carolina 441 (Southern Rock) – last event of the season. 

Family Fun Nights at Promise Lane Church, 31 Promise Lane, Franklin, is Oct. 2, and Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. A free painting lesson, a fall art piece to take home; and snacks, games, and fellowship on Oct. 2; and on Oct. 16, Free Family Fun Night will feature pumpkin carving/painting with the theme of “Learning how God sees us inside and out.” Snacks, games, and fellowship. The Angel Medical Center Stroke Support Group will offer a free program on stroke risk factors and available treatment options on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Angel Medical Center cafeteria. Robin Jones, retired Mission Health Stroke Program Director, will discuss stroke risk factors, as well as stroke treatment options available locally and at Mission Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Third Annual Warrior Walk sponsored by 828Vets is Oct. 4 at the Tassee Shelter on the Little Tennessee Greenway, from 10 a.m. to  2 p.m. The event is designed to bring attention to veterans in general and, more specifically, to provide information regarding what 828Vets offers. Veterans and the public are invited to attend and take a short walk on the Greenway as well as participate in activities and enjoy food. For more information, follow 828Vets on Facebook. 

Together We Can’s Golden Harvest Gala is Oct. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Cove, 677 Willis Cove Road, Franklin. Paradise Music in Franklin is offering live music, free food, drawings for free merchandise, a giveaway of a new Eastman acoustic guitar, and more, Oct. 5, beginning at 10 a.m. The store is located at 232 NE Main St, Franklin.

The Annual Annie Sorrells Reunion will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at Franklin Memorial Park Building, 488 W. Main Street, Franklin. Bring a covered dish to share. Friends and family are invited.

Ginseng Production for homeowners who desire to grow “sang” free seminar will be held Oct. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Macon Extension Center, 193 Thomas Heights Rd., Franklin. Speakers Christy Bredenkamp, Macon Extension director, and David Komorowski, soil conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will cover various ginseng production topics. The Cullasaja Community Association will have its fall meeting on Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at the community building. On the agenda is planning for the holidays.

Nantahala Hiking Club offers a free program Oct. 10, at 6 p.m., 149 Siler Farm Rd., Franklin. Tanya Poole, N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, will share best practices to avoid bears and how to handle an approach by a bear. For more information, visit https://www.nantahalahikingclub.org.

Rev. Bill Bradley and Deborah Roberts Bradley Family Reunion is on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 28 Lakey. 

Creek Road, Franklin Sign-in will start at 11:30 a.m., and Potluck Lunch will begin at noon. All relatives and friends are invited.

Neighborhood Care Drive is underway through Friday, Oct. 18.  Items needed include toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, shampoo, conditioner, body wash etc. A complete list can be found on the Otto Community Development Organization Facebook page. Healthy Little Learners, hosted by Macon County Health Department, is every second Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Macon County Public Library. Gentle Yoga Class is held Thursday mornings, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. to all ages and fitness levels by Victoria Rundquist, who has more than 25 years of yoga instruction experience. No set fee is charged but a donation will help offset facility costs. Classes are held at The Spiritual Light Center, 80 Heritage Hollow Drive, behind the Gazebo Restaurant, Franklin.
