Historical facts predate battle of the Alamo

Letter to the Editor

A recent letter concluded with the suggestion that the USA buy Mexico to solve our border issues. The letter also attempted to remind those of who may have forgotten our American history regarding the battle of the Alamo and how that unfolded.

Curiously, the explanation omitted the critical historical facts that predated this conflict. Namely, that the land which is currently the state of Texas was at that time part of Mexico, not the USA. Sam Houston and his followers illegally occupied this area. Mexico graciously overlooked their illegal entry and occupation as long as it remained temporary. They had other pressing internal issues to resolve with the French troops in Mexico.

Sam Houston whipped up support for succession of this part of Mexico among his followers illegally living there. Additionally, some of the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the agreement by which this land was acquired, were not honored by the USA.

It is beyond arrogant to suggest the USA buy another country because it is cheaper than dealing with border issues cooperatively. I wonder how we would feel if a world power would suggest they buy the USA to avoid dealing with us?
